High Point, North Carolina, is confronting significant housing challenges, including affordability issues and inadequate living conditions. Approximately 30% of households experience housing problems, with renters and low-income families being the most affected. Notably, 65% of renters earning below half the area’s median family income are cost-burdened, and 43% live in inadequate conditions. Similarly, 68% of homeowners in this income bracket face cost burdens, and nearly 48% reside in substandard housing.
In response, several community initiatives have been launched to address these issues. The Southwest Renewal Foundation (SWRF) is leading efforts to revitalize inner-city southwest High Point. Their projects include the Heritage Greenway, a linear park designed to connect people and places, and the ‘Plan South Main’ project, which aims to transform South Main Street into a safe, walkable, and active urban corridor.
Additionally, the High Point Housing Authority is actively working to improve public housing conditions. They oversee 1,335 units, with plans to adapt 94 units for residents with special disabilities, including making 84 wheelchair-accessible and modifying 10 for sight- or hearing-impaired residents.
Community organizations are also addressing related issues. The Greater High Point Food Alliance focuses on alleviating hunger by coordinating city-wide and neighborhood-focused initiatives to develop more just and sustainable supplemental food systems.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain. The High Point 2045 Plan highlights a perceived north/south divide in the city, with disparities in median household income and homeownership rates. Recognizing and developing strategies to overcome these disparities is a priority for fostering a sense of community and unity.
Addressing High Point’s housing challenges requires a collaborative approach, involving city officials, community organizations, and residents. Through ongoing initiatives and strategic planning, the city aims to create a more inclusive and equitable living environment for all its residents.
